Pirates get to tell their side

A great piece today from McClatchy tells the tale of 5 jailed Somali pirates. The pirates reinforce the notion that foreign ships overfishing their waters (illegally). The pirates apparently started off as a type of coast guard to protect local fishermen from predatory Asian and European trawlers. Some former coast guardsmen, without many options either, are providing assistance and training.

The Somali government didn't help things at all - the notorious dysfunction made them unable to police their waters but even delineate territorial zones.

Fascinating piece: At former British prison, Somali pirates tell their side.
